· Definition
A descriptive text is a text that describes the features of particular thing, e.g. someone, something, or a certain place. Description is usually organized to include:
- an introduction to the subject of the description;
- characteristic features of the subject, e.g. physical appearance, qualities, habitual behavior, significant attributes.
· Social Function
The social purpose of the descriptive text is to describe the particular person, thing, or place. For example: The social purpose of the text “Wonosobo” is to describe a city name Wonosobo.
· Text structure
Identification : identifying the phenomenon to be described.
Description : describing the phenomenon in parts of qualities and characteristics.
· Language Feature
- Specific participant: has a specific object, not general and unique (only one). For example: Justin Bieber, my new classmate.
- The use of adjective to clarify noun (noun). For example: close friendship, sharp, tall, innocent, famous, popular, new, nice, good
- The use of simple present tense: Sentence pattern used is simple present because it tells the fact of the object description.
- Action verbs: there is a verb that shows an activity (its activity can be seen) for example: born, come, play, live, sit, teach
